April 2021

AI Act Proposed

The European Commission published its proposal for a regulation laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence.

August 2024

Act Entered into Force

Following adoption by the European Parliament and Council, the AI Act was published in the Official Journal and entered into force.

February 2025

Prohibited Practices Banned

AI systems deemed to pose unacceptable risk — social scoring, manipulative techniques, and real-time biometric surveillance — are banned.

August 2, 2026

Transparency Obligations Apply

Transparency obligations (Article 50) apply for new AI systems.

December 2, 2026

Watermarking Applies

Article 50(2) watermarking obligations for AI-generated content apply.

December 2, 2027

High-Risk Enforceable

High-risk AI system obligations (Annex III) fully enforceable. Fines of up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover apply.
